About Gary: Gary Pederson has been teaching
music at a variety of levels and settings since 1978. He
began teaching in Chester, followed by 5 years in the Twin
Cities and 6 years in Chicago where, in addition to band,
he taught classroom general music and served as adjunct
professor at St Xavier College. After returning to South
Dakota he has taught high school band at Tri-Valley, West
Lyon (IA), and Washington High School. Mr. Pederson’s WHS
Symphonic Band performed at the State Band Masters Convention
in 1998. He is now band director at Memorial Middle School
in Sioux Falls after teaching several years at Patrick Henry
Middle School.
Mr. Pederson holds a BA from SDSU and a MA from Augustana
College. In addition to his school teaching, Gary serves
as director of the Sioux Empire Brass Society, a community
brass choir/brass band started by Dr. Harold Krueger. He
has played tuba with the Sioux Empire Brass, the Sioux Falls
Municipal Band, the Dakota Wind Ensemble, and the South
Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Pederson’s other musical
interests include classical guitar (which he also played
with the SDSO), world music, composing and arranging, and
music technology.
