Marlin Smart:


As a graduate of Watertown High School in 1969, Marlin Smart entered college at Jamestown College. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts (summa cum laude). Marlin majored in elementary education and minored in mathematics and political science. His graduate work was completed at South Dakota State University with a Master of Education with a major in Educational Administration in 1976.
His work history includes one year at North Platte, Nebraska as a sixth grade teacher. Marlin then taught 2 years in Lake Preston as a high school math teacher. For the next 34 years Marlin was employed at the Milbank School District. His job descriptions in Milbank included High School math teacher (2 years), Director of Special Services/Assistant High School Principal (5 years), Middle School Principal/Director of Curriculum (18 years), and Superintendent (9 years). He just recently retired in June of 2010.


Marlin's honors include an Eagle Scout, High School honor graduate and member of National Honor Society. He also attended the 1968 SD Boys' State. In college Marlin was a College Fellow in Political Science and a member of Alpha Chi (National Honor Society). In 1983 he was honored to be named the South Dakota ARC (formerly called Association for Retarded Citizens) Educator of the Year. Marlin was selected in 1998 as a member of SD Beadle Club (honorary education organization to further school lands). In 2000 Marlin served as the President of the SD Association for Middle Level Education and served as the Chair of the three-state Regional Middle Level Education Conference.

Overview

The Distinguished Administrator Award is presented yearly at the South Dakota All State Chorus/Orchestra Concert. The criteria for this award includes:
a. Recommended by a member of the SDMEA
b. Must have served a minimum of ten cumulative years as an administrator in any school or collegiate institution in South Dakota
c. Last years of service must be in South Dakota (previous to the years the award is given)
d. Candidate may be from any area of administration-elementary, secondary or collegiate.
