Service to Music
These awards were presented at the 2010 All State
Chorus/Orchestra Concert in Aberdeen, SD. Our recipients
are:
Mike Coyne:
Mike Coyne was band and choral director at Hoven High School from 1966 to 2005. During his career the Hoven concert band received 39 consecutive Division "I" ratings at region music contests. His concert choir earned twenty-eight consecutive years of "I" ratings as well. Under Coyne's direction, the Hoven High School marching band had a history of success in both field and parade events. Hoven High School was not only a consistent winner in Class "C" but also won the "Over-all Marching Band Trophy" on numerous occasions.
Born and raised in Aberdeen, Coyne was a graduate of Aberdeen Central High School. He received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Northern State University and in 1973 a Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley. Coyne was named South Dakota Bandmaster of the Year in 1985. In 2007 he was presented the Outstanding Music Educator Award by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
Although he retired in 2005, he continues to be involved in music as a judge and conductor. He serves as conductor of the Cathedral of the Praries "All Faiths Choir" that performs in December with the South Dakota Symphony at St. Anthonys Church in Hoven. Mike's wife, Linda, is a high school teacher at Hoven High School. They have three adult children including Jon (Lynn) of Tea, Joel of Mitchell, and Jeff of Aberdeen.
