| SDMEA Distinguished
Service to Music
These awards were presented at the 2009 All State
Chorus/Orchestra Concert in Rapid City. Our recipients
are:
Dr. Charles Canaan:
Charles Canaan had earned degrees
from California State University at Long
Beach (BA), Western Michigan University (MA) and Arizona
State University
(DMA). During his career he taught choral music at
the secondary level for
fourteen years and the collegiate level for the twenty-four
years. He taught
at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa before
becoming the Director of
Choral Activities at South Dakota State University
in 1986, a position he
held until his retirement in 2003.
Upon retirement he served as an adjunct
voice instructor at the University
of Sioux Falls and Lincoln High School (SF). For the
past six years he has
been the choral director and organist at First Lutheran
Church in Brookings
and is now in his fourth year as an adjunct voice
instructor at SDSU. He
continues to remain active as a clinician, adjudicator
and guest conductor.
He has directed honors choirs in Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota,
Nebraska, North
Dakota and South Dakota. Choirs under his direction
have appeared at state,
regional and national conventions of the Music Educator's
National
Conference (MENC) and the American Choral Directors
Association (ACDA).
Previous awards he has received include:
the South Dakota ACDA's Lifetime
Achievement Award (1997), the SDSU Teacher of the
Year Award (2002) and
National Federation of High Schools Outstanding Music
Teacher of the Year
award for South Dakota (2004). He and his wife, Joan,
reside in Brookings,
have three married sons and eight grandchildren and
enjoy traveling at home
and abroad.
Mrs. Barbara Newman:
Barb Newman has taught general music and beginner’s
band for over 34 years in the Pierre and Brookings
School districts. She now teaches privately and is
founder and director of Capital City
Children’s Chorus, a non-profit organization that
services unchanged voices in the Pierre and surrounding
area. She has judged regional music contests throughout
the State of South Dakota, and has directed high school
music festivals, IMC, community choruses, theatre
musicals, Episcopal church choirs and is a featured
clarinet soloist.
Mrs. Newman is a graduate of SDSU, and has her Level
Three Orff-Schulwerk certification from the University
of St. Thomas. She is past president of South Dakota
Music Educators Association and has served as an Elementary
Chair, Membership Chair, and currently Government
and Relations Chair. She is also a member of ACDA,
National Orff-Schulwerk Association, National Kodaly
Association and is on the advisory board for SD Alliance
for Arts Education (SDAAE).
Mrs. Newman and her husband Rick are owners of the
Zesto Ice Cream Shoppe in Pierre and have two children,
a daughter Jocelyn 30, who is a dermatology resident
at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, and a son Brendan 24, audio
engineer and guitarist in Manhattan, New York.

| The Distinguished Service to Music Award is presented
yearly at the South Dakota All State Chorus/Orchestra
Concert. The criteria for this award includes: |
a. Candidate may be from any
area of music education: elementary, choral, instrumental,
general music or private studio teaching
b. Maximum of five awards given each year
c. Minimum of 30 years of service to music education
d. Last years of service must be in South Dakota
e. Candidate must have given total commitment to the
teaching of music (statewide) |
