Program Overview
This recognition is given annually to any South Dakota
high school whose music programs demonstrate high involvement
in music courses and activities. This recognizes the
effectiveness of programs that offer attractive music
curricula as well as those that excel in the recruitment
and retention of students.
Schools which meet the criteria will hold the award
for three years, during which time they may be reapply
for the award at the same or different level of membership.
If selected the school agrees to serve SDMEA as resource*
on the topics of programming, scheduling, recruitment
and retention of music students if called upon.
Serving as a resource might include examples
of:
how scheduling allows students to stay involved
in music
how the school, administration and faculty recruit
students into their music department
what kind of curriculum is used to retain students
SDMEA agrees to allow ample time for schools
to comply to this request.
Eligibility Requirements
1. All music staff must be members of SDMEA.
2. South Dakota public or parochial schools are eligible.
Criteria
Classification is determined by SDHSAA Music Classification
(9-11 enrollment from previous year).
0-125 - Class C
level 1 Exemplary 75%
level 2 Exceptional 65%
level 3 Noteworthy 55%
126-425 Class B
level 1 Exemplary 60%
level 2 Exceptional 50%
level 3 Noteworthy 40%
426-725 Class A
level 1 Exemplary 45%
level 2 Exceptional 40%
level 3 Noteworthy 35%
726 and above Class AA
level 1 Exemplary 35%
level 2 Exceptional 30%
level 3 Noteworthy 25%
Nomination Procedure
The nomination must be signed and verified by the
high school principal or Activities Director. Only 9-12
students may be counted, and each student may only be
counted once. For example, if John Doe is enrolled in
both vocal and instrumental music classes, he may only
be counted once total.
